Overview

This is an online certificate designed to meet the needs of students who have completed a master’s degree in clinical mental health, community counseling or addictions counseling and now desire to become a licensed school counselor in North Carolina. The certificate consists of a minimum of 12-credit hours.

Successful completion of the program requirements and passing the PRAXIS II Specialty Area Test for School Counselors will enable the student to be recommended for licensure in school counseling to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI).

Non-North Carolina residents who meet the admissions requirements are welcome to apply to the certificate program. Students are responsible for checking with their state education department for current certification requirements. The American School Counselor Association provides basic information on state certification requirements.

The Doctorate and Master's degrees in counseling are accredited by CACREP. UNC Charlotte is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

Curriculum

Summer (first session)

This is an elective course and is determined by the department. Specific course offerings are subject to change.

CSLG 6000 - Consultation and Case Management in Schools and Community (3 credits)
This course will provide students with a general overview on the use and development of consultation with diverse client populations as well as effective case management of client cases. This course is not appropriate for students new to their program of study. The course is structured for School and Clinical Mental Health counseling students (as an elective), but is open to other helping professionals with instructor permission.

Summer (second session)

CSLG 7141 - The Professional School Counselor (3 credits)
Development of skills necessary for the integration of counseling activities into the school curriculum and in support of the school’s academic mission..  This course utilizes the ASCA National Model to prepare school counselors to develop comprehensive guidance programs and responsive services in schools. Focus is on the school counselor’s role in counseling individuals, small group counseling, classroom guidance, consultation, program design, coordinating school and community resources, and administration of special programs. (Summer, Fall).

Fall

CSLG 7646 - Administration and Leadership of School Counseling Services (3 credits)
This course will focus on the organization, planning, management, and evaluation of school counseling programs. Current issues impacting school counselors will be explored and intervention strategies will be examined. In addition, students will engage in a project to gather data at their internship site and offer these results to effect some manner of systemic change. Additional emphasis will be given to being an educational leader through coordination of services. Students will also be introduced to models of supervision and supervision skills (Fall, Spring).

Spring

CSLG 7436 - Advanced Internship in Counseling (3 credits)
(300 hrs per semester) Additional internship hours may be required dependent upon student's clinical training/experience in previous masters program.

Delivery Method

Courses are delivered 100% online using Moodle and Saba Meeting. Saba Meeting is used for synchronous class meetings scheduled for specific days and times in each course.

Admission

  • Do you live outside of the State of North Carolina?
  • A Master’s degree in Counseling from a CACREP-accredited program in the areas of clinical mental health, community counseling or addictions counseling.
  • A statement of purpose which explains the applicant’s career goals
  • One copy of official transcripts from all academic coursework beyond high school; uploading unofficial transcripts in Apply Yourself in not required
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Apply to UNC Charlotte as a Graduate Certificate student using the online admission application at the Graduate School.

Proctored Testing
