Unique to Distance Education

Some processes work differently for students who take classes off-campus whether they are at a site or online. Below you will find some policies that differ for Distance Education students. Please take some time to review these topics.

Class Cancellation

UNC Charlotte classes may be cancelled for weather-related reasons or for other circumstances. University closings are announced at:

  • UNC Charlotte Alerts at www.uncc.edu
  • Inclement Weather Hotline at 704-687-2877

Notice: To receive emergency alerts by text message and/or email, click here. Then follow the instructions. If you have questions about your specific class, off-campus or online, check your UNC Charlotte email for updates from your instructor.

Students must make independent judgments about their individual situations based on the local hazards.

Immunizations and Health Insurance:

Distance Education students are not required to meet the immunization requirements and are not eligible for health insurance. If you receive a letter from the university regarding immunizations and health insurance and you are only taking Distance Education courses, you may disregard the letter. If you are taking on-campus courses in addition to your DE courses, please review the immunization and health policy at: www.healthsvcs.uncc.edu

Student ID Cards

Distance Education students will receive at Distance Education “non-photo” ID card. With a valid photo ID (driver’s license, passport) this card can be used to identify a UNC Charlotte Distance Education student. Distance Education ID cards are required for off-campus verification of student status and proctored exams.

If you are required to come to campus for your program, or you anticipate that you will visit campus regularly, a 49er “photo” ID card is required. Click here for additional 49er ID card information or contact the 49er Card Office at 704-687-7337.

Course Evaluations:

Distance Education students have the same opportunity each semester to evaluate their courses as do on-campus students. Evaluation responses are anonymous and student input is very valuable.

Program Evaluations:

In addition to course evaluations, each year you will be asked to complete a Distance Education Program Evaluation. This evaluation provides you with the opportunity to comment on the services and support you received from the Office of Distance Education as well as other UNC Charlotte departments. These evaluations are important to the continual improvement of Distance Education services.

On-Campus Orientations

Although you may receive a letter from admissions instructing you to attend an on campus SOAR or Graduate School orientation, Distance Education students are not required to attend these functions. On-campus orientations are specifically designed for on-campus students and may provide erroneous information for DE students. Please read your program information to learn about the orientation specific to your program.
