The 30-credit-hour Engineering Management Master of Science Degree (MSEM) program is multidisciplinary, combining elements of advanced study in various engineering disciplines with studies of business and system operations and organizational behavior. The MSEM program prepares professionals for careers in managing projects, programs, systems and organizations.

The MSEM program prepares graduates to:
  • Handle operational issues from a system perspective,
  • Manage units with technical functions,
  • Manage units with business and management functions,
  • Handle interdisciplinary issues and problems,
  • Make decisions at all levels of an organization from the top management problems, to strategic planning, product development and launching, production, marketing and sales, logistics support, and field services,
  • Understand future trends in global markets and economy, and
  • Manage multinational units, projects, and global supply chains.
Program Eligibility Requirements
  1. Either a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a closely related technical or scientific field, or a bachelor's degree in business, provided relevant technical course requirements have been met. It is expected that some students in the second category will have a major in business and a minor in engineering.
  2. Undergraduate coursework in engineering economics (or equivalent).

  4. Statistics (STAT 1220 or STAT 3128 at UNC Charlotte).
  5. An average grade of 3.0 (out of 4) on items 2,3, and 4 above.

Degree Requirements

Thesis Option 24 hours of coursework and six semester hours of thesis research.
Non-Thesis Option 30 hours of interdisciplinary coursework.

How are these online Courses Delivered?
Most components of the MSEM online courses are delivered asynchronously through the Blackboard Vista learning management system. Asynchronous means that the students can go through the course materials at any time and any place. For the synchronous components of our online courses, we use online learning systems such as Wimba. Synchronous sessions require students logging into teleconference-type class sessions at specified times using a headset with an attached microphone. See the Distance Education Orientation for Technical Specifications and information about Blackboard Vista and Wimba.

How to find courses on the University Course Schedule.
Use the MSEM program curriculum and course schedule as a guide to finding MSEM distance education courses on the University Course Schedule.

Distance Education courses are listed by semester on the University Course Schedule and have section numbers with an 8 as the middle digit (example: 080). To locate MSEM courses, make the following selections on the "Class Schedule Search" page:

  • Subject: Engineering Management (narrow the search by including a course number)
  • Campus: Distance Education
  • Course Level: Graduate
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Class Search"
