The Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language is for educators who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (Phase I ) Program at UNC Charlotte who are interested in teaching English learners (ELs) in K-12 public schools. The M.A.T. (Phase II) is offered through distance education. Students can complete the 5 additional courses (15 credit hours) within the MAT to complete the 34-hour master’s degree program in an online format.
Who would benefit from this program?
- Qualified candidates who have completed Phase I may apply to continue into Phase II to complete the remaining requirements for the Master’s degree and qualify for the advanced Standard Professional II teaching license.

- The program is built on social justice principles, with equity and advocacy at the center. The program draws on the most current research in linguistics, second language acquisition, curriculum design, and teaching methodologies.
