Program Overview

The Special Education (K-12): General Curriculum graduate certificate is a 27 credit hour graduate level program that meets the requirements for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Standard Professional I initial teaching license.

The Special Education (K-12): General Curriculum is a licensure program that is designed for individuals who wish to become special education teachers; and, for teachers currently licensed in an area other than special education who wish to also have a special education teaching license. 
*Please note that this program is not for currently licensed special education teachers*

Teachers licensed in Special Education (K-12) General Curriculum teach students who have mild intellectual disability, learning disabilities, and/or emotional/behavioral disorders.

The 27 credit hours of the graduate certificate can be applied to the Master of Arts in Teaching Special Education if admitted to the program.  To complete the Master’s degree is an additional 12 credit hours. Successful completion of the MAT program will lead to a recommendation for an advanced teaching license.
